Best dam lining material for your water pan and reservoirs
Selecting dam liner material for dam lining is always a challenge to farmers, technicians and engineers. This is because there are various dam liner materials which have to be matched with the soil type. Selection of quality dam liners in Kenya is key so as to achieve the best value for money and longevity. Grekkon Limited team of technicians and water engineers will guide you on all that you need to get the best dam liners.

Factors to consider when selecting dam lining material
Dam liner thickness
Consider the thickness of the dam liner material before making any purchase. Here is the thickness guideline:
500 microns Dam liners
- For medium irrigation water storage (From as low as 10m3 to 3,000m3)
- Works on a smooth to moderate rough surfaces with tiny pebbles.
- This dam liner also works well on murram surfaces, so long as it has been smoothened.
750 microns Dam liners
- For slightly larger projects (Holding 200m3 to more than 10,000m3 or more depending on the surface.
- Can withstand rough surfaces and murram areas.
1,000 microns Dam liners
- For holding large water volumes
- Are designed for very large dams and very rough surfaces.
Type of Dam liner
There are various types of dam liners to choose from. The choice will depend on the intended use. You can either select HDPE, PVC or LLDPE Dam liners. HDPE Dam liners are the most stable with excellent UV and weather resistance. They are the best dam liners for long term projects. PVC Dam liners are soft, light and easy to deliver and install. However, they are not stable hence not advisable for long term projects. LLDPE Dam liners are soft and easy to install. Unfortunately, they have less tensile strength which makes them susceptible to deformations and tears.
UV Treatment
Dam liners must be UV treated to increase longevity. Good quality dam liners should last between 10-30 years. Lifespan of various dam liners gauges are as follows:
- 0.5mm= 10-15 years
- 0.75mm = 15-20 years
- 1.0mm= 30 years plus
Dam liner Material
Good dam liner materials should be made from virgin materials, not recycled. Recycled dam liners have very short lifespan and tend to crack within 1 year. The materials should be highly resistant to abrasion and puncturing. They should be easy to work with.
Regardless of the challenge faced in selecting a dam lining material, Grekkon Limited team of engineers and technicians are always ready to assist you identify the best liners for your need.
